Amongst other leaders, technologists, policy makers, researchers, technologists, linguistics and citizens have made extensive attempts to come up with robust means to promote the use of sign language in public, private and social settings. However, communication between the hearing and non-hearing people is still a challenge, due most people might not understand or exposed to sign language, and even the use of an interpreters or translators has its own challenges.
Locally, the promotion and facilitation equitable treatment and management of language is anchor in the Use of Official Languages Act, 2012. Furthermore, in the spirit of advancing the use of the SASL, South African (SA) Government launched the Sign Language Charter that to compel all government departments, as well as the private sector to make provisions for South African Sign Language Interpreting and guarantees access to services for Deaf persons in public spaces.
However, there is neither enough efforts from citizens to actively learn sign language nor the communication systems readily available to enable seamless sign language communication
At REAH, technology and innovation are explored to play an increasingly important role in promoting everyday use of sign language. REAH vision is to build human-computer interactions using devices and software to recognize and facilitate sign language communication, deliver apps to learn sign language and up-to-date daily vocabulary, access to a wide range of sign language related services, and provide an open digital platform for sign language..
Our goal is to come up with robust human-machine centered solutions which are cost effective and less cumbersome. REAH has put together a team of technologist, computer engineers, sign language advisors, interpreters, marketers and business analysts to attempt where it is near impossible to advance human interactions across different communities..
